Office Manager - Ashkal Alwan - Lebanon

General Duties
- Handling general logistics
- Managing the contact database and centralizing important documents on the server
- Answering phone, email and general correspondence, and forwarding specific queries to appropriate staff
- Coordinating and keeping track of administrative, financial and organizational schedules
- Following up on legal documents such as contracts, legal letters and certificates in coordination with Ashkal Alwan legal advisors and staff, and corresponding with local authorities when necessary
- Handling visas/ travel arrangements for staff and visitors, including flight and hotel reservation, transport, car rental, etc.
- Maintaining smooth functioning of offices and of Home Workspace in general (i.e. ordering supplies, equipment, phone systems, etc.)
- Maintaining complete inventory of general office equipment and furniture
- Supervising and managing maintenance and up-keep of Home Workspace, and of other Ashkal Alwan residency apartments
- Liaising with vendors, service providers and suppliers, ensuring that all purchases are cost-effective and at best value
- Answering general research archive queries
- Managing the research archive, including documentation
- Welcoming and keeping track of visitors to research hub
- Welcoming and orienting guests and residents, and providing each with appropriate guest kit

Administrative/ Financial Duties
- Keeping financial records and entering daily vouchers and data in coordination with the association’s accountant/auditor
- Administering payroll and other expenditures, including re-granting, as signed and approved by the Director
- Administering expense accounts, cultivation costs, per-diems, honoraria, etc. to staff, guests, and event participants and managing appropriate invoices and receipts
- Administering revenue such as from book sales, venue rental, etc.
- Realizing financial reports and requests to funders

Qualifications
- B.A. or equivalent in Business, Humanities or related studies

Architects, Civil and Mechanical Engineers - D-RASATI - Lebanon

Project description: Developing Rehabilitation Assistance to Schools and Teachers Improvement (D-RASATI) will enhance educational outcomes in Lebanon by improving teacher and student performance, increasing community and parental involvement, and ameliorating the school learning environment. D-RASATI is a project funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID)

Summary of Function: Within this context, D-RASATI is seeking Civil and Mechanical Engineers, and Architects to conduct technical surveys in order to assess the conditions and identify the rehabilitation needs of public school buildings and their facilities during the months of June, July and August of 2011. The architects and engineers will work under the supervision of the Rehabilitation Program Director and the Senior Engineer to conduct the surveys in a timely manner with high quality in all regions of Lebanon and subsequently may oversee the proper implementation of the rehabilitation work required

Essential Functions [but are not limited to]:
- Using engineering judgment, experience and knowledge, assess schools physical needs and conditions and determine required repairs;
- Prepare bill of quantities (BOQ’s), including quantities and cost estimates of work required to perform the repairs;
- Prepare sketches of required repairs and or locations;
- Using engineering judgment and knowledge identify safety issues and risks and flag them including structural, mechanical, electrical or others;
- Take measurements to calculate and estimate required repairs;
- Direct oversight of all construction, repair and/or engineering activities in a designated geographical area including the preparation of bill of quantity;
- Act as a liaison with the stakeholders in the designated geographical area on a day-to-day basis; Assist in promoting communications, dissemination of information, and dialogue among targeted beneficiaries and communities;
- Ensure on-time implementation of the rehabilitation program activities;
- Monitor and supervise the rehabilitation activities, and communicate in a timely manner any hindrances and opportunities to the Senior Engineer and Rehabilitation Program Director;
- Report regularly to the Rehabilitation Program Director and the Senior Engineer on projects’ progress;
- Supervise and maintain close coordination with all project contractors and stakeholders;
- Follow up on repair and rehabilitation work progress, quality, costs, schedules with contractors and day to day reporting to Senior Engineer and rehabilitation Program Director;

Qualifications
- A civil engineer, mechanical engineer, or an architect who is a member of one of the Orders of Engineers and Architects of Lebanon or has the educational and other credentials required to join;
- Relevant experience in school rehabilitation or similar education projects is an asset;
- Good communication skills required;
- Fluency in Arabic required, English is a plus;
- Ability to work in a cross cultural environment ;
- Ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines;
- Is problem solver and achiever;
- Car and mobile phone are a must;

Senior Writer/Content Developer - LAU - Lebanon

The Marketing and Communications Department (MarCom) at the Lebanese American University is looking for a senior writer/content developer to join a dynamic team of multidisciplinary professionals with a common desire to contribute to the successful implementation of the university’s integrated marketing and communications initiative.

Area of expertise
Writing, editing, copy-editing, journalism and communication.

The Senior Writer/Content Developer must act as a key player in the development of all university publications, and actively participate to the development of the university’s quarterly publication, LAU Magazine & Alumni Bulletin.
The Senior Writer/Content Developer’s primary duty is to produce news and features for periodical print publications, including the magazine and the university’s website. He/she will be actively involved in the editorial development of LAU print and electronic communications from concept to completion, and will strive to ensure that all communications conform to rigorous editorial standards.
He/she will have strong writing and editing skills, along with previous experience in journalism and publishing.
This position will reinforce the overall mission and values of the university, support the goals of the University Advancement team and reflect LAU’s commitment to openness and transparency in both message and process.

Major duties and responsibilities
- To confer with LAU departments to analyze and interpret specific writing needs.
- To plan and create appropriate publications including newsletters, pamphlets, brochures, features and foundation proposals in accordance with specific budgetary requirements.
- To report on university events on campuses (Beirut and Byblos) in order to ensure coverage on the university’s various communication channels. Reporting duties include conducting interviews with LAU personnel and guests, performing extensive research of source materials to obtain and verify facts, and analyzing sources for accuracy of information and the most effective approach to material.
- To write news and feature articles for the LAU website and magazine in addition to other university publications, and to refer freelancer-submitted articles to the appropriate editor for review and approval.
- To copyedit documents from different university departments.
- To collaborate with the Web Editor and other department staff to enhance communications and efficiency within the university.
- To systematically archive collected information and photos as required by the web editor.
- To inform the Marketing and Communications Department about new initiatives, research, and upcoming events that may deserve coverage, based on information collected during fieldwork.
- To assist in fulfilling the promotion of the branding and visual identity program internally. Ten percent of the staff writer’s job will be to work on creative assignments.
- To adhere to editorial and procedural standards of the Marketing and Communications Department, and the Lebanese American University as a whole.

Minimum qualifications
- An advanced degree in communication, English literature or a related field from an accredited university.
- 3-4 years of writing experience in communication, public relations , and/or three years as a reporter.
- Excellent command of written and spoken English.
- Computer proficiency (Microsoft Excel/Word/PowerPoint) and minimum Web knowledge.
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work effectively under pressure.
- Strong ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously and respect deadlines.
- Self-directed and rely on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals.
- Strong interpretation skills required.
- Excellent writing skills and good communications skills.
- Ability to work in a group as well as independently, particularly in coordinating and completing projects for online and print publication.

Additional qualifications
While not strictly necessary, each of the following qualifications will be considered a plus:
